An undead riding his giant mammoth.
Mounts are a much sought after form of transportation in which players ride atop the backs of various more or less exotic beasts (or machinations). Warlocks, paladins and death knights can learn to summon mounts as a class perk. The new Alliance Worgen have a race skill Running Wild that they will get at level 20. Druids can shape shift into multiple forms that improve their speed. Mounted travel is almost always faster than walking/running (some vanity mounts such as Sea Turtle provide no speed benefit on the ground). World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade introduced flying mounts in select areas, which further increased the maximum possible player movement speed. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm opened up much of Azeroth to flying mounts.
Mounts were generally expensive in the past, but their prices have been reduced while the training to ride them increased in order to compensate. However, some mounts do not cost any gold or other currencies (such as honor points) and will drop at very low drop rates from bosses in instances such as Stratholme, Zul'Gurub, Tempest Keep, Magisters' Terrace, Sethekk Halls, Karazhan, and Utgarde Pinnacle. There are numerous other methods to obtain mounts as well, such as class quests, completing achievements, and even a select few rare spawns drop mounts.
Mounts have a 1.5 second cast time, which will be interrupted by taking any damage, moving, or entering combat. Mounts also have a special emote that can be seen by either jumping (the Space key by default) while not moving or performing the /mountspecial slash command. For example hawkstriders will shriek and horses will rear up on their hind legs.
Riding skills and abilities[]
NOTE: After Cataclysm Cataclysm, speed is not based on mount class but only on riding skill!
A Human Mage riding a Swift White Steed, an Alliance Epic Mount.
Blood Knights riding their Horde paladin mounts.
There are a total of eight classes of mounts:
| Class | Quality | Ground | Air | Water |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ground mounts | Rare | 60% | — | 0% |
| "Very fast" ground mounts | Epic | 100% | — | 0% |
| Flying mounts | Rare | 100% | 150% | — |
| "Very fast" flying mounts | Epic | 100% | 280% | — |
| "Extremely fast" flying mounts | Epic | 100% | 310% | — |
| Amphibious mounts | Rare | 0% | — | 250% |
| Aquatic mounts | Rare/Epic | 0% | — | 100%/350% |
| Vanity mounts | Rare/Epic | 0% | — | 0% |
| Scaling mounts | Rare/Epic | 60–100% | 150–310% | 0% |
The majority of mounts (the first four classes) are directly related to the four ranks of riding skill. Ground mounts cannot fly and flying mounts will instantly dismount the rider if they enter water. However, ground mounts can swim (but not any faster than swimming without the mount) and aquatic mounts can walk on land (but not any faster than walking without the mount). Vanity mounts confer no benefits (and thus, require no riding skill or character level), while scaling mounts only require the absolute minimum riding skill and will gain capabilities and speed based on the rider's skill and location.
Apprentice: Level 20
Apprentice riding skill (75) costs 4g for training and an additional 1g for each mount, both reduced by the appropriate reputation discounts. These mounts have a 60% riding speed.
At level 20, warlocks and paladins can learn the spells [Summon Felsteed] and [Summon Warhorse] at the cost of 1g from their class trainers, which grants them apprentice riding skill.
Journeyman: Level 40
Journeyman riding skill (150) costs 50g for training and an additional 10g for each mount, both reduced by the appropriate reputation discounts. These mounts have a 100% riding speed.
At level 40, paladins and warlocks can learn [Summon Charger] and [Dreadsteed] from their class trainers after learning the Journeyman riding skill from the riding trainer. There is no need to purchase a new mount. Death knights receive their epic ground mount, the [Acherus Deathcharger], after the completion of the quests Grand Theft Palomino and Into the Realm of Shadows at level 55.
Expert: Level 60
Expert riding skill (225) costs 250g for training and an additional 50g for each mount, both reduced by the appropriate reputation discounts. Rare flying mounts increase movement speed by 150% in the air and 60% on the ground. Formerly, flying mounts were only usable while within Outland and Northrend, but in the Cataclysm expansion players are able to use flying mounts in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms following the purchase of a Flight Master's License available at level 60 for the cost of 250g. However, flying in Northrend requires Cold Weather Flying training (see below).
Druids can learn [Flight Form] from any flight trainer at level 58 for 3g.
Flight Master's License
Fully active in Patch 4.0.3a, players with Cataclysm expansion installed and activated can purchase a [Flight Master's License] for 250g at any Riding trainer which allows them to fly in any of the Fail:WoW Icon 16x16.gif classic (aka "vanilla") zones in Azeroth including, of course, new Cataclysm zones.
Artisan: Level 70
Artisan riding skill (300) costs 5,000g for training and an additional 100g for each mount, both reduced by the appropriate reputation discounts. Epic flying mounts increase movement speed by 100% on the ground and 280% in the air. No class-granted abilities award artisan flying, although the Druid ability [Swift Flight Form] requires it.
Cold Weather Flying: Level 68
The [Cold Weather Flying] skill used to cost 1,000g. This non-discountable training grants players the ability to also use their flying mounts in Northrend. It required at least level 77 and expert riding skill. From Patch 3.2 up to just prior to Cataclysm Cataclysm, level 80 characters could buy a bind to account heirloom, the [Tome of Cold Weather Flight], which allowed characters of level 68 to learn the spell, making flight in Northrend possible from an earlier level at the time.
As of Patch 4.0.1, the cost was reduced to 500g (which could further be reduced by faction discounts down to 400g if exalted) and requires level 68 and expert (225) riding skill, which eliminated the need for the Tome of Cold Weather Flight.
Master: Level 80
Master riding skill (375) costs 5,000g for training, reduced by the appropriate reputation discount. Introduced with Patch 4.0.1, this opens up 310% flying speed to any level 80 that can afford it. However, any characters that already had a 310% speed flying mount pre-4.0.1 were given this skill automatically and free of charge with 4.0.1. Purchasing this riding skill will unlock 310% flying speed for all flying mounts a player can own.
One considerable exception to this is the reward from the meta world events achievement Fail:Money achievement.png What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been, the [Reins of the Violet Proto-Drake]. After many posts on the forums from disappointed players who had been working on the achievement, Zarhym announced that the Violet Proto-Drake would be hotfixed it so that obtaining it after Patch 4.0.1 will award Master riding.
Wisdom of the Four Winds: Level 90
The [Wisdom of the Four Winds] training costs 2,500g, grants players the ability to also use their flying mounts in Pandaria and requires at least level 90 and expert riding skill. As of Patch 5.0.4, it can only be learned from either Alliance Cloudrunner Leng <Flying Trainer> in the Shrine of Seven Stars or Horde Skydancer Shun <Flying Trainer> in the Shrine of Two Moons.
Cloud Serpent Riding: Level 90
The skill [Cloud Serpent Riding] is a reward from the quest N [90] Riding the Skies. As of Patch 5.0.4 the quest is available only to those who have become Exalted with the Order of the Cloud Serpent faction. Cloud Serpent Riding allows players to ride Cloud Serpent mounts.

Increasing your speed[]
Through guild advancement[]
The guild perk Mount Up will increase your riding speed by 10%.
Through class abilities and talents[]
Two trolls riding raptors.
Shaman and Druids acquire shapeshift forms ([Ghost Wolf] for shaman and [Travel Form] for druids) that increase their movement speed (not as much as a mount, but it is trainable at an earlier level), while Hunters get aspects to boost their own movement speed and that of their party. Rogues and druids (in [Cat Form]) have an ability to temporarily increase movement speed. Here are the skills and abilities that provide some classes with a bit of a faster mount movement speed, either passively or by the activation of an ability.
- Death knight Death knight
- Unholy Presence [Unholy Presence] as of Mists of Pandaria "Mists of Pandaria", Unholy Presence now grants an additional 15% movement speed, regardless of specialization.
- Hunter Hunter
- Pathfinding [Pathfinding] in the Beast Mastery talent tree (tier 3). Increases your speed while mounted by 5%/10%. The mounted movement speed increase does not stack with other effects.
- Paladin Paladin
- Pursuit of Justice [Pursuit of Justice] in the Retribution talent tree (tier 3). Increases your movement speed (and mounted movement speed) by 8%/15%. This does not stack with other speed increasing effects.
- Crusader Aura [Crusader Aura] at level 62. Movement speed while mounted is increased by 20%. The mounted movement speed increase does not stack with other effects.
- Aura Mastery [Aura Mastery] in the Holy tree (tier 3) does not directly increase mounted movement speed, but it does boost Crusader Aura. With these two abilities combined, it is possible to increase mounted movement speed by 40% for 6 seconds every 2 minutes.
Through items and enchants[]
A Thundering Jade Cloud Serpent.
There are five other methods for increasing your mounted speed, with no effects beyond level 70:
- [Enchant Gloves - Riding Skill]: +2% (stacking), world drop Enchanting recipe
- [Mithril Spurs]: +4% (stacking), world drop Blacksmithing plans
- [Riding Crop]:Fail:Bc icon.gif +10% (non-stacking), Leatherworking pattern sold in Old Hillsbrad Foothills.
- [Skybreaker Whip]:Fail:Bc icon.gif +10% (non-stacking), quest reward from N [70] Dragonmaw Race: Captain Skyshatter, must be Honored with Netherwing.
These last two items effectively increase a mount's speed by 10%. However, they do not stack with the previously mentioned methods, so they are approximately (see below) a 1% improvement over using the above 3 items combined. It should be also noted that for players of WotLK the Riding Crop is only usable for two levels (69 and 70), and the Skybreaker Whip only for one level (70).
All speed improvement items work on both normal and flying mounts (with the exception of npc controlled point-to-point flight).
WotLK Characters higher than level 70 will not benefit from mount speed improvement items and enchants. With Cataclysm, the following are no longer available:
- [Carrot on a Stick]: +3% (stacking), reward from the Gahz'rilla quest in Zul'Farrak.
Available mounts[]
The face of a Grey Riding Yak.
The tables below are separated based on mount source, such as purchase requirements, killing specific creatures, participating in world events, completing achievements or more.
Racial mounts[]
Racial land mounts are typically the first mounts players will acquire. To purchase a racial land mount, players must either purchase their race's mount (such as horses for humans, or wolves for orcs), or gain exalted standing with that race's representative faction (such as exalted with Darnassus to purchase sabers). Flying mounts do not require any reputation rating.
In the initial release of Cataclysm Cataclysm, the worgen did not get a racial mount, but instead used the ability [Running Wild] to achieve mount-like speeds. However, a mountain horse mount (regular and swift) was added in Patch 4.3 as the worgen racial mount.

Class-specific mounts[]
An Azure Cloud Serpent.
There are four classes in the game that can acquire special mounts and abilities linked to their own class through lore: death knights, druids, paladins, and warlocks. The original quests to gain the paladin charger, warlock dreadsteed, and druid's swift flight form are all still in-game and reward feats of strength if they are completed. The aforementioned quests are not required to learn the ability, however, and are on the class trainers at the level listed in the table.
Druid and paladin abilities are slightly different based on race and faction. For example, the Alliance charger is blue and golden, while the Horde version is red and bronze. Similarly, night elf druids are black in flight form, while tauren are tan. With Cataclysm, it seems that tauren and draenei paladins will not be getting chargers, but special types of Kodo and Elekk mounts, respectively.[2][3]

Faction reward mounts[]
As a reward for gaining high reputation standing with various factions, players can purchase mounts. Such high reputation is a function of large quantities of time.
Rare drop mounts[]
Rarely, specific creatures will drop a mount as a reward. If the mount drops, only one mount will appear per kill, no matter the size of the party or raid killing the creature. Also, mounts may rarely be inside other containers rewarded for doing other objectives.

Guaranteed drop mounts[]
A guaranteed drop mount will result in one mount being awarded upon killing the specified creature under the condition listed, regardless of the size of the party or raid. For mounts rewarded such that everyone who completes the achievement gets the mount, see the "Achievements" section. There is no direct achievement for killing the Time-Lost Proto-Drake; the hard part is actually finding the drake alive.

Holiday mounts[]
The Time-lost Proto Drake.
There are several disguises and time-limited items that are available during holidays. Disguises simply turn the player's mount into something "more festive" like a kodo or a reindeer but do not otherwise affect mount mechanics. Time-limited items exist only during the duration of the holiday itself. Previously, time-limited items had a set time such as seven or 14 days, but were changed to be directly tied to the holiday.
Back during Brewfest 2007, an ["Honorary Brewer" Hand Stamp] was available for purchase and granted access to the [Brewfest Ram] and [Swift Brewfest Ram] vendors. Coren Direbrew (the holiday boss in the Grim Guzzler of Blackrock Depths) had not yet been implemented, so completing the quest was the only way to get the mounts. The hand stamp was removed for the 2008 Brewfest and the Swift Brewfest Ram added to Coren Direbrew's loot table (along with the new [Great Brewfest Kodo]), but the 60%-speed Brewfest Ram can no longer be purchased except by players who completed the Hand Stamp quest.

Flying mounts in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms[]
With careful use of Eagle Eye or Far Sight, it is possible to see why Flying Mounts are not allowed in the old world until the Cataclysm expansion hits.
At BlizzCon 2009 it was revealed that flying mounts will be available in some form to use in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms with the release of the next expansion, titled Cataclysm. Blizzard officials had previously stated that it was unlikely that they would allow flying mounts in these continents since doing so would require them to redesign the continents with flying mounts in mind.
Prior to Cataclysm Cataclysm, the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor were unsuitable for flying mounts; there were visual glitches like mountains and high buildings whose tops cannot be seen, and places where the terrain abruptly changes from one tileset to another, creating a grossly unrealistic appearance in some areas. There are also zones which should have been there lore-wise but were empty and unfinished.
With the expansion, rebuilding the continents is precisely what zone developers did, which explains why flying in those continents became possible.
Vanity mounts[]
Vanity mounts only exist to put the player on a mount. They confer no bonuses to movement speed, and thus require no riding skill. The two vanity mounts are the [Rickety Magic Broom], a fairly common reward for completing daily quests during Hallow's End, and the [Riding Turtle], available from the TCG.

Patch history[]
Mists of Pandaria[]
- Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.2.0 (patch date::5-Mar-2013): Upon reaching level 20 and level 60, characters will automatically receive a new quest directing them to visit the racial riding trainer and mount vendors.
- Mists of Pandaria β Patch 5.0.1 (Beta): Most mounts will be Account-wide mounts.
Cataclysm[]
- Cataclysm Patch 4.2.0 (patch date::28-Jun-2011): Alliance [Vicious War Steed] or Horde [Vicious War Wolf] awarded for winning 75, 150, or 300 rated battlegrounds.
- WotLK/Cataclysm Patch 4.0.1 (patch date::12-Oct-2010): All mounts now scale to the appropriate riding skill. This means that all 310% speed mounts earned from achievements or were awarded from this patch onward are 280% in order to match the current max riding skill, Artisan. Players who already have a 310% mount are grandfathered into the system.
PvP mounts now cost 2,000 Honor point
- WotLK/Cataclysm Patch 4.0.1 (patch date::12-Oct-2010): Mounts that are both ground and flying will no longer need to be dismounted and then re-mounted to switch between types. This will now be automatic.
Wrath of the Lich King[]
- WotLK Patch 3.3.3 (patch date::2010-03-23): Battlegrounds will no longer award Marks of Honor. Items which previously required Marks of Honor will have their costs adjusted to remove these requirements.
PvP mounts now cost 50,000 Honor point
- WotLK Patch 3.3.0 (patch date::08-Dec-2009): Knockbacks no longer dismount players. If on a flying mount, you will be knocked back a short distance before being able to resume flying.
- WotLK Patch 3.2.2 (patch date::2009-09-22): Undocumented change
The riding trainers in Thrallmar and Honor Hold are now part of the Orgrimmar and Stormwind factions respectively. Note also that this change doesn't apply to trainers in Northrend.
- WotLK Patch 3.2.0 (patch date::04-Aug-2009):
- The cast time for summoning any ground or flying[7] mount is now 1.5 seconds, down from 3 seconds.
- Apprentice Riding (Skill 75): Can now be learned at level 20 for 4g. Mail will be sent to players who reach level 20 directing them to the riding trainer.
- Journeyman Riding (Skill 150): Can now be learned at level 40 for 50g. Mail will be sent to players who reach level 40 directing them back to the riding trainer.
- Expert Riding (Skill 225): Can now be learned at level 60 for 600g from trainers in Honor Hold or Thrallmar. Faction discounts now apply (Honor Hold for Alliance; Thrallmar for Horde). Flight speed at this skill level has been increased to 150% of run speed, up from 60%.
- Artisan Riding (Skill 300): Faction discounts now apply (Honor Hold or Valiance Expedition for Alliance; Thrallmar or Warsong Offensive for Horde).
- Flying over Dalaran and Wintergrasp is now possible so long as players keep a healthy distance above the ground.
- The ravasaur trainer Mor'vek has returned to Un'Goro and will offer to help Horde players raise and train a [Venomhide Ravasaur] as a mount... if they can survive the creature's deadly poison.
- WotLK Patch 3.1.0 (patch date::14-Apr-2009): All Ground Mounts may now swim without dismounting the rider. Flying Mounts still may NOT, and will dismount the rider upon entering water.
- WotLK Patch 3.0.8 (patch date::2009-01-20): Racial restrictions on mounts have now been lifted. Night elves on mechanostriders? Tauren on raptors? You're not seeing things.
- TBC/WotLK Patch 3.0.2 (patch date::14-Oct-2008):
- Mounting is now permitted in Ahn'Qiraj.
- New Vanity Pet and Mount changes: Players will now be able to access their non-combat pets and mounts by clicking on the pets tab in the Character Info panel. These pets and mounts will be now learnable much like spells or abilities. Once a vanity pet or mount is learned, the icon will disappear from within a player's inventory and reappear in the appropriate tab under the pet tab under Character Info. Say goodbye to your vanity pets and mounts taking up bag and bank slots! Lost pets and mounts (one time quest rewards) can be recovered by visiting a stablemaster.

- TBC Patch 2.3.0 (patch date::13-Nov-2007): Nutral, the flight master in Shattrath City, now has a quest for characters who are level 70 and do not yet have a riding skill of 225. The quest will direct a character to visit the appropriate riding instructor in Shadowmoon Valley so that the player will know where they can purchase the skill necessary to use a flying mount.
- TBC Patch 2.1.0 (patch date::22-May-2007):
- Swift Flying Mounts: All the swift flying mounts will now display as epic items, rather than superior-quality items.

- Fail:WoW Icon 16x16.gif Patch 1.4.0 (patch date::2005-05-05): Level 60 mounts purchased at vendors now have a whole new look. Faster undead mounts already have a different look and so have not changed. The new mounts can be seen standing near the mount vendors. If you have one of the old fast mounts, you can exchange it for one with a new look at the mount vendor.
- Fail:WoW Icon 16x16.gif Patch 1.3.0 (patch date::07-Mar-2005): Mounts now are Horde or Alliance restricted in the tooltip. We do not intend to allow Horde players to ride Alliance vendor-purchased mounts and vice versa.

- Fail:WoW Icon 16x16.gif Patch 1.1.0 (patch date::07-Nov-2004): Tauren players will no longer have the [Plainsrunning] ability, due to the availability of Kodo mounts! Tauren players can purchase the Kodo mount at Bloodhoof village.
Notes[]
- Mounts have a special emote they can do: This can be invoked while motionless on the ground, either by the
/mountspecialslash command, or by pressing the Space key - Flying mounts can perform a loop! Press Pitch Up or Pitch Down (normally Ins and Del) while in flight to perform a loop. On a macintosh, the Help key, or the Fn+Del combination (on the laptop) will start it.
- Additionally, while in a loop, you can use your strafe keys.
- Mounts that allow passengers (the two choppers, the [Grand Ice Mammoth], the [Traveler's Tundra Mammoth] and [Grand Black War Mammoth]) allow other characters to ride as passengers. Currently, the only flying mount that allows passengers is the Recruit-A-Friend mount, the [X-53 Touring Rocket].
